Severe Mental Illness Report

This report provides insights and recommendations for mental health services in Nottingham & Nottinghamshire.

Aligned with the NHS Long Term Plan, NHFT commissioned the project amid a large-scale transformation of mental health services across adult pathways. Drawing from sixteen dominant themes, it addresses awareness, barriers, and experiences, contributing to ongoing improvements in the system.

This report highlights key challenges in accessing mental health services in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, including:

  • Long waiting times for treatment
  • Inconsistent care delivery
  • Referral issues leading to crisis situations

Main areas of concern identified in the report:

  • Lack of early intervention in mental health issues
  • Poor communication between services and patients
  • Inadequate crisis care and response systems

Positive aspects:

  • Some services were praised for their effectiveness and quality of care

Recommendations for improvement:

  • Focus on early intervention strategies to prevent escalation
  • Enhance crisis care services to provide timely support
  • Deliver more holistic, person-centered care to address individual needs
