Key findings

• No major areas of concern were identified, and this was consistent with the feedback received from those spoken to.
• Visitors and residents rated safety and security very highly, alongside general happiness with the kindness and care shown.
• No one raised any aspect of the environment they wanted to see changed.
• Staff turnover was low, and staff were not distracted from caring for residents by administrative record-keeping.
• Residents appeared to receive a lot of one-to-one attention, with staff observed as friendly, kind and attentive.
• The activity co-ordinator was highly motivated, running a weekly programme, a regular newsletter, and imaginative individual activities (e.g. tactile items, scrapbooks, sensory activities); other care staff pitched in to support activities as time allowed.
• Mealtimes were observed as calm, unhurried, and attentive, with residents offered choice and second helpings.
• Two minor observations were noted for improvement: the front door's simple lock was found latched open during the visit (compared to keypad systems seen at other homes), and a "musty" smell was noted in common areas in the morning, suggesting scope to improve ventilation.
• The home's management accepted the report.
