Healthwatch Nottingham and Nottinghamshire visited Lancaster Grange Care Home in January 2020 to understand the quality of care being provided, the environment, and the experience of people living in the home. The visit looked at how safe residents were, how well staff supported people’s needs, and whether residents were treated with dignity and respect. Overall, the home was found to be well run, with positive feedback from residents and staff, alongside a small number of areas where improvements could be made.

Key findings

  • The home was clean, safe and well maintained
  • Residents and relatives spoke positively about the care provided
  • Staff were described as kind, caring and respectful
  • Residents appeared well supported with personal care and daily routines
  • Care plans were in place and generally detailed and person-centred
  • Staff understood how to recognise and report safeguarding concerns
  • Medicines were managed safely and appropriately
  • Residents were supported to maintain interests and take part in activities
  • Systems were in place for complaints, feedback and quality monitoring
  • Some residents and staff indicated that time pressures could affect depth of interaction and care planning discussions

Recommendations

  • Ensure staff have enough time to fully engage with residents beyond essential tasks
  • Strengthen opportunities for staff to spend more time reviewing and understanding care plans
  • Continue to support meaningful activities and personalised engagement for residents
  • Maintain strong systems for gathering feedback from residents and families
  • Ensure learning from feedback is clearly acted on and communicated back to people using the service
